Safe Sex in NYC

I??ve taken up the challenge thrown down by CK. It essentially boils down to this:

??My own suggestion for NYC-branded condom copy that I’ll submitting to the Mayor’s office? “I heart NY…and tonight, I heart you.” Do hope they take me up on it; it’s for a good cause and would make for a most interesting portfolio piece.

Now what kind of marketer would I be if I didn’t listen to you guys: if you would like to suggest your own line of copy for the wrappers, just leave it in the comments and I’ll include them with my own (I’ll credit each person for their contribution). City Hall hasn’t asked for suggestions, mind you, but I know they’ll appreciate the free recommendations from smart marketers embracing a socially responsible cause. Remember, it must have a NY slant; so it can be bold–hmm, one could say ballsy (!)–but within limits, kids.?

Not one to back down from a challenge, I??ll submit two propositions. With the help of my buddy Ryan, a designer at Parable Communications in Ottawa, we??ve quickly put together these designs (very rough mock-ups):

Safe in the city NYC condom challenge New York Copulation
The first is a recognizable play on a Sex in the City design. Using the word ??Safe?, I believe, plays up a nice double-meaning:

1. Safe = condom
2. Safe delivers a relevant health message

The second design is a play on NYC, with an added wink: the Statue of Liberty is on her back.

Just thought I??d play along, CK, without getting too deep into the great discussion going on in your comments.

Note to Stephen Denny: Love your suggestion, ??If you can make it HERE, you’ll make it anywhere?.

Ryan and you R-O-C-K. You took it so many (safe!) steps further by creating artwork…I love that lady liberty is on her back (ha!). So clever. I just admire and love clever. Sigh.

See the great things that emerge when smart, creative marketers come together to brainstorm solutions to very difficult problems? Safe sex is a socially responsible initiative and the way to increase safe-sex practices is to make the solutions available and creative so people are also prompted to practice good health. Because current programs are not working.

I’ll let you know what City Hall says; I’ve got a contact over at the Health Dept. so I’m hoping they’re as delighted with our free, clever recommendations as I am. Again, Ryan and you ROCK.

    Very COOL!!!!

  3. Nedra Weinreich Says:

I love the “Safe in the City” logo. But before I read the explanation of the “New York Copulation” logo, I assumed it was supposed to be a phallic symbol, looked at those spikes and thought “Yowch!!”

  4. Mark Says:

Thanks for all the great feedback.

Nedra: Didn’t mean for it to hurt! We threw these together quickly to present the idea. We’ll tighten them up if and when necessary.

  5. CK Says:

Nedra’s “yowch!” is too funny. I’m just compiling the list of these goodies now = priceless (as is health).

  6. Mark Says:

If you haven’t joined in from CK’s blog, then check out the rest of the list from her readers over at http://www.ck-blog.com/cks_blog/2007/01/oh_what_the_mar.html

I’m sure you’ll recognize the logo at the top of her post! Thanks, CK.

  7. CK Says:

    Here’s some other goodies

    – from Rebecca Edmonston: The subway logo with the line: “The Safest Ride in NYC.” Ha!

    – Also…”Give in to the BIG Apple of Temptation” from Chris Blackman.

    – And of course I love (heart!) my own of “I heart NY…and tonight, I heart you.”

  8. JFB Says:

    Hey Hi,
I love the two designs. Very creative. I like the horizontal statue.

By the way, I still didn’t find a good way to include the 2000 bloggers in a post… Let me know if you find.
